Report: Four Premier League clubs now rivalling Spurs interest in Sam Johnstone

Tottenham are one of five Premier League clubs monitoring West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to The Sun.

Johnstone, who has missed the Baggies’ last five Championship games, is set to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract comes to an end (BBC Sport).

The 29-year-old’s imminent availability has now put clubs in the top-tier on alert ahead of a potential move, with Tottenham thought to be keen on a free transfer this summer.

The Sun recently reported that Spurs are interested in signing Johnstone to provide competition for No 1 option Hugo Lloris, with a view to potentially succeeding the Frenchman.

And the same publication has now confirmed the interest from Antonio Conte’s side but notes the likes of Newcastle, West Ham, Leicester and Brighton are all tracking the goalkeeper, who is open to a back-up role if the opportunity is right.

Former Manchester United stopper Johnstone enjoyed a positive campaign in the Premier League with West Brom in 2020-21 which earned him a call-up to the England fold.

He was a part of Gareth Southgate’s squad at Euro 2020 last year but did not manage to make an appearance with Everton’s Jordan Pickford preferred ahead of him.

Johnstone is a sensible option that Tottenham should look to bring in considering he would be a decent back-up to provide cover from Lloris and he adds to the homegrown quota.

The fact he is set to become a free agent is an added bonus which is why there are plenty of other clubs lurking to try and secure his services.
