Report: French club now leading race for free agent linked with Spurs and Man Utd

According to French outlet Le10 Sport, Marseille are the frontrunners in the race for free agent Axel Witsel, who Tottenham have also been linked with.

Witsel has reached the end of a four-year contract with Borussia Dortmund and thus is available on a free transfer this summer (TransferMarkt).

The 33-year-old made 145 appearances for BVB, scoring 13 times and providing six assists from a deep midfield role (TransferMarkt).

German publication Der Westen first suggested that both Tottenham and Manchester United were possible destinations for the Belgian. However, Le10 Sport now claim that Marseille are in pole position to bring Witsel to Ligue 1 next season.

Antonio Conte has reportedly outlined that he wants to bring in ready-made players who can make a difference to his Spurs side immediately (Football.London).

The acquisition of Croatian wing-back Ivan Perisic has demonstrated Conte’s plan, with the 32-year-old having lots of experience winning trophies at the top level.

Spurs Web Opinion

Although not the most glamorous option in the heart of midfield, Witsel is strong, solid, experienced, and not to mention free.

Whilst there are perhaps more exciting profiles out there who Spurs are considering, if Witsel was to be brought in to provide depth in Conte’s midfield, then I would not be mad.
