Report: How Alfie Devine and Ashley Phillips are doing at Plymouth Argyle

Both Alfie Devine and Ashley Phillips delivered decent displays in Plymouth Argyle’s win over Cardiff City on Saturday if Plymouth Live‘s player ratings are to go by.

There will be quite a lot of eyes on Devine, who was recalled from his spell at Port Vale and loaned to Plymouth until the end of the season so that he can test himself at a higher level.

According to the likes of Alasdair Gold, there are hopes at Hotspur Way that the attacking midfielder could compete for a first-team spot at Tottenham next season, with the club expected to follow his progress closely (Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast).

Meanwhile, Phillips, who joined Spurs from Blackburn Rovers last summer, moved to Argyle on loan earlier this month, with the centre-back being named the Man of the Match in his debut against Huddersfield Town on January 13.

Both Spurs loanees impress against Cardiff

It appears Phillips had a slightly more shaky home debut a couple of days ago against the Welsh side but the teenager was still handed a rating of 7 out 10 by Plymouth Live as Ian Foster’s men emerged 3-1 winners.

The outlet wrote about the Blackburn academy graduate: “Was at fault when Cardiff took the lead from a 10th-minute corner. He did not attack the ball when it was swung towards him in the Argyle penalty area and the ball dropped invitingly for Perry Ng to score.

“The 18-year-old loan signing from Tottenham Hotspur did show good composure not to let that affect the rest of his game, though, and physically he stood up well to the test posed by Cardiff striker Yakou Meite.”

Devine played 77 minutes on his debut before being replaced by Adam Randell, registering an assist for the home side’s opener.

The midfielder was also handed a 7 out of 10 by Plymouth Live, who said about his display: “After a quiet start, the 19-year-old loan signing from Tottenham Hotspur got better and more assertive as the game went on.

“It cannot have been easy for him to make his Argyle debut after just a couple of days of training with his new teammates but he showed good promise for the rest of the season. Had the assist for Ryan Hardie’s first goal with a low cross into the striker.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It looks like both Phillips and Devine are likely to start every game for Plymouth, which would have been a key consideration for Spurs before approving their loan moves. Many Tottenham fans will certainly be keeping a close eye on Ian Forster’s men for the next four months.
