Report: How Arsenal could open door for Spurs to sign experienced right-back

Football.London have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could make a move to sign Matt Doherty this summer as Wolves edge closer to landing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal.

Previous reports indicated that Maitland-Niles was one of the options Tottenham were considering this summer as they seek to sign an upgrade over Serge Aurier at right-back (Daily Mail).

However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on Monday that Wolves have won the race for the Gunners man, with an announcement likely this week.

Football.London claims that Wolves’ capture of Maitland-Niles may free up Matt Doherty to leave Molineux this summer.

It is claimed that Spurs could be eyeing a move for Doherty, potentially viewing him as an even better fit for their system than Maitland-Niles.

The report asserts that Jose Mourinho wants to bring in a wing-back who can push higher up the pitch like Aurier did last season, which is why the Republic of Ireland could be the ideal option for Spurs.

Spurs Web Opinion

While I can certainly see the logic behind why Jose would want to go after Matt Doherty, there have hardly been any reports linking us with the Wolves man. It does not also appear as if Wolves are ready to sell the right-back despite being on the verge of signing Maitland-Niles. I suspect Nuno Espirito Santo wants to use the Arsenal man in midfield next season rather than as a replacement for Doherty.
