Report: How Luka Modric could scupper Tottenham’s potential move for new defender

Tottenham Hotspur may soon be forced into the transfer market for a new centre-back, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both potentially leaving on free transfers at the end of the season.

Unless they sign new deals, both Belgians will be able to talk to non-English clubs in January ahead of free moves in the summer.

It was reported last week by El Desmarque that Jose Mourinho had identified a top-class replacement in the form of Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

However, El Desmarque have also now reported that Real Madrid are interested in taking the defender off Napoli’s hands, and they are willing to offer a player to sweeten the deal.

Luka Modric may have left North London many years ago, but he could come back to bite Spurs as Madrid are apparently willing to part with the midfielder plus £42m for Koulibaly.

It would certainly be hard for Mourinho and Levy to compete with that kind of spending power.
