Report: How many points Spurs will likely need to earn Champions League football

Tottenham Hotspur are firmly locked in the race for a top-four spot this season in the Premier League, which would lead to Champions League qualification. Here’s how many points has been enough, historically speaking, to secure that position in years gone by.

When Ange Postecoglou arrived at the club, expectations for this season were on the floor. It didn’t help matters that star striker, Harry Kane, was sold in the summer, too.

However, as we head into the final stretch of the campaign, Spurs are currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League table, just two points behind Aston Villa in fourth.

While hopes of a title challenge are fading fast, the hunt for Champions League qualification is very much on, and Spurs will be hoping they can do enough in the remaining 13 games to make that happen.

How many points do Spurs need to get the top four?

So, what exactly does ‘enough’ look like? Well, the folks at Football.London have pulled together facts and figures from the last decade to determine how many points Spurs will likely need to secure a place in the top four.

It seems that, in three of the last five campaigns, 71 points has been the magic number. To achieve that, Spurs would need to win eight of those final 13 games, earning them a further 24 points.

66 points is the lowest total that has been enough to land a top-four spot, achieved by Chelsea in the 2019/20 season, and the following year the Blues did it again with just 67 points.

With the league as competitive as it is this year, it is far more likely that 71 points will be closer to the required figure.

However, there is of course the matter of extra Champions League places up for grabs next season. That all depends on the performance of clubs in European competitions this year, with England not currently in line for the extra spot.

If Arsenal and Manchester City can progress in the Champions League, there is a chance that a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League this season would be enough for Spurs to play in Europe’s elite competition next term.

I reckon it will all go right down to the wire this season for Spurs, and our final league position will depend largely on how we perform in that incredibly tough run in April and May where we face Arsenal, City, and Liverpool back-to-back.
