Opinion: With a reported £500,000 loan fee; forward is a good back-up option for Spurs

Christian Benteke has been linked with a move Tottenham Hotspur in recent weeks, despite struggling at his current club Crystal Palace. The Telegraph reported that Benteke had been offered to Spurs.

Tottenham are without Harry Kane until early April due to a ruptured tendon in his left hamstring that resulted in surgery for the England captain.

However, while Benteke is out of form, Crystal Palace are said to want just £500,000 to take the player on loan for the rest of the season (Sky Sports).

Benteke has played 16 games this season, without netting a single goal for Palace, although the majority of these appearances have come from the bench (Transfer Markt).

If a Spurs move could reawaken the man who scored 49 in 101 games for Aston Villa between 2012 and 2015, then it would surely be worth the money (Wikipedia).

Benteke is just about as out of form as is possible, but he should be considered a back-up plan.

The worst-case scenario for Tottenham this window is that Daniel Levy does not bring in anyone to play up top.

Not only are Spurs missing a focal point for Mourinho’s more direct style of play, but they are wasting the likes of Moura, Dele, and Son who are better when playing off a target man and running in behind.

While I would like Cavani, Alcacer, or Jovic, I would happily take Benteke for £500,000 over no one at all.

If Spurs do not bring anyone else in this month, a last-minute deal for Benteke as a target man up front would at least be something.
