Report: How Postecoglou convinced Chris Davies to join Tottenham

The Athletic have revealed that Chris Davies was mightily impressed with Ange Postecoglou’s vision for Tottenham Hotspur when the Australian called him in the summer about joining his coaching staff.

Postecoglou prefers to work with a new team of coaches at each of his clubs, unlike other managers who take the same team with them wherever they go. He did the same at Tottenham, with Davies being among those to join his set-up as the club’s new senior assistant coach.

The Spurs head coach has spoken in glowing terms about his number two on a number of occasions, describing him as ‘a key contributor’ to the project that is underway at the club (Football.London).

The 38-year-old was reportedly approached by Swansea City to take over as their next manager back in December but he rejected the offer to remain at Hotspur Way (BBC Sport).

How did Postecoglou convince Chris Davies to join Spurs?

The Athletic have now shed light on how Postecoglou convinced the former Liverpool, Leicester City and Celtic coach to be part of his project at Tottenham.

The report says that the Spurs boss explained to Davies that he would be joining a completely different Spurs to the one he had faced.

The Welsh coach was allegedly struck by how Postecoglou made him feel, with the Aussie said to have been fully supportive of his ambitions to one day become manager and promising to aid him in that journey.

The report adds that Davies was also hugely impressed by Postecoglou’s ambition to make Spurs the best and the most intense team in the Premier League.

Spurs Web Opinion

We know that Postecoglou relies on his coaches to run the day-to-day training sessions (after briefing them on the specifics) so that he can play a withdrawn role and maintain his aura among the squad.

So, the Australian needed to be able to get an A-team with him and he appears to have done just that, with Davies being particularly important to his set-up.
