Report: How some of the Spurs squad feel about Mason getting interim job

The Daily Mail have claimed that a number of Tottenham players are pleased that Ryan Mason has been handed the reins, with the 31-year-old being the preferred candidate for many in the squad following Antonio Conte’s departure.

Mason’s second tenure as interim head coach has started in impressive fashion, with the Lilywhites earning a hard-fought draw against Manchester United.

The most impressive aspect of the performance was the fact that despite being 2-0 down at half-time, the players did not let their heads drop and fought back to level the score.

The Mail have now claimed that several Tottenham players wanted Mason to get the job until the end of the season when Conte departed.

Some were said to be bewildered when Cristian Stellini got the gig, with one source quoted as saying: “What’s the point of sacking a manager and putting his assistant in charge? Absolutely nothing changed.”

The outlet adds that Mason himself was keen to take on the responsibility when Conte departed Spurs at the end of last month.

In fact, The Mail suggest that there was even some concern earlier his week that the former Tottenham midfielder would not accept the offer after being initially overlooked in favour of Stellini.

Mason comes across as an extremely impressive individual and a natural leader. He has now worked with and under different types of managers, from whom he would have picked up a lot of tactical nuances.

He was always the obvious candidate to turn to when Conte was let go but that does not mean that he should be in consideration for the full-time role.

Any calls for Mason to be handed the reins permanently are quite premature and his lack of experience at a top club would make the appointment a very risky one.

So, I do not think Levy would not consider that no matter how well the 31-year-old does until the end of the season.
