Report: How Tottenham’s homegrown numbers are impacted by deadline-day deals

The Evening Standard have revealed that following Matt Doherty’s departure on transfer deadline day, Antonio Conte will not have to leave any of his first-team players out of the Champions League squad.

Clubs are allowed to name 17 non-homegrown players in their Champions League squad, with Eric Dier and Matt Doherty both considered non-homegrown since they spent their formative years in Portugal and Ireland respectively.

In addition, despite qualifying for the age criteria, Pape Sarr and Bryan Gil cannot be named on the B-list as they have not been at Spurs for long enough.

That meant that Tottenham were at the limit of 17 non-homegrown players, prior to the January window (Football.London).

The arrivals of Arnaut Danjuma and Pedro Porro could have thus complicated matters for Antonio Conte ahead of the resumption of the Champions League.

However, The Evening Standard explained on their transfer deadline blog that the departures of Bryan Gil and Matt Doherty have made room for both of Tottenham’s new signings to be included in the squad.

Gil returned to Sevilla on loan until the end of the season on Monday while Doherty’s contract was terminated, thus allowing him to sign for Atletico Madrid.

Here’s how the make-up of Tottenham’s squad looks after the deadline day business.

Champions League non-homegrown players: Hugo Lloris, Davinson Sanchez, Emerson Royal, Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Clement Lenglet, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Son Heung-min, Ivan Perisic, Dejan Kulusevski, Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Lucas Moura, Arnaut Danjuma, Pedro Porro (17).

Champions League homegrown players: Brandon Austin, Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga, Ben Davies, Oliver Skipp, Harry Kane (7).

Spurs Web Opinion

This is perhaps one of the main reasons that Tottenham decided to terminate Doherty’s contract as we were left with one extra home-grown player.

There is no doubt that the club could have handled the situation better and potentially got a transfer fee for the 30-year-old if they had made a decision earlier in the window.

Perhaps, Conte had insisted that Doherty and Spence can only leave once Porro had been signed, which has led to the club sacrificing a transfer fee for the former Wolves man.
