Report: Inter Milan and Juventus both interested in Spurs-linked defender

CalcioMercato have now revealed that Inter Milan and Juventus have both entered the race for AS Roma centre-back Chris Smalling, who is rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar.

Smalling has been in exceptional form for Roma over the last 18 months and the defender is showing no signs of decline despite turning 33 last month.

However, the centre-back’s future at the Stadio Olimpico is up in the air, with his current contract running out at the end of the season (Transfermarkt).

CMW.it reported earlier this month that Tottenham are ready to offer Smalling a route back to the Premier League. The report added that Antonio Conte is driving Tottenham’s interest in Smalling as the Italian ‘doesn’t stop thinking about’ the Roma star.

CalcioMercato has now provided an update on Smalling’s future, explaining that there is no indication that the centre-back is going to sign a new contract with Jose Mourinho’s side.

The report adds that Inter and Juve are also interested in the England international, with the Nerazzurri said to have already initiated contact with the player while the Bianconeri are ‘in the background’.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Smalling has turned his career around since leaving Man Utd, and one can argue that the 33-year-old is now a much-improved player. However, I do not want him at Spurs as there is a question mark about how well he would be able to cope with the intensity of the Premier League.
