Report: International defender could leave Spurs next month if new club is found

Matt Doherty could be set to leave Tottenham Hotspur during the upcoming transfer window, according to The Athletic.

The Republic of Ireland international moved to North London from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August of last year in a £14.7million deal (The Guardian).

Doherty was set to challenge Serge Aurier for the right-back berth within Jose Mourinho’s squad, but failed to make an impact and made just 17 appearances in the Premier League last season (transfermarkt).

The arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo as Mourinho’s successor looked to have given Doherty a fresh opportunity, having previously impressed under the management of the Portuguese during their time together at Wolves, however, he found himself considerably overlooked with Japhet Tanganga and Emerson Royal both ahead of him in the pecking order.

Doherty’s only taste of top flight football following Antonio Conte’s arrival came as a second half replacement in the 3-0 win against Norwich City at the beginning of this month.

The report claims that Tottenham will look to move on the 29-year-old, who is under contract until the summer of 2024 if they are able to find him a new club when the window reopens.

It just hasn’t happened for Doherty at Tottenham and at 29, the club now need to look to get him out of the door to maximise his re-sale value before he enters the final two years of his contract.
