Report: Italian club held January ‘chats’ with Spurs star’s camp over potential move

Tottenham Hotspur star, Jan Vertonghen, has just a number of months remaining on his current contract in North London.

There have been no indications as of yet that the Belgian central defender will be given a new deal or an extension, meaning that he may be set to leave on a free in the summer.

Vertonghen has been at Tottenham since 2012 when he transferred from Ajax, and has gone on to represent the Lilywhites 311 times since then, scoring 12 goals (Wikipedia).

It has now been reported that Napoli held ‘chats’ with Vertonghen’s camp in the January transfer window, which would make summer talks easier to restart (Corriere dello Sport as relayed by Sport Witness).

The Italian side are said to be on the lookout for a new centre back and are tempted by Vertonghen due to his experience and contract situation.

While he does not fit their usual philosophy when it comes to signings, they believe that they could also sign another young centre-back to place behind Vertonghen for development.
