Report: Jose Mourinho calls off contract talks with first-team star

According to a report by The Express, Jose Mourinho has decided to call off talks with Jan Vertognhen over a new deal.

Previous reports indicated that Tottenham were only willing to offer the 33-year-old a one-year extension while he was demanding a two-year deal (Football Insider).

The centre-half has been backed to leave Spurs this summer after eight years at the club when his contract comes to an end on June 30th.

It now appears that Mourinho has given up any hope of keeping the defender at the club next season with The Express claiming that the Spurs head coach has asked the club to stop the contract discussions.

However, the report does suggest that Mourinho will use the former Ajax man this season, even though it is not revealed if the defender will accept a short-term extension until the end of the campaign.

The report also claims that Fiorentina have now entered the race for Vertonghen and are ready to challenge both Inter Milan and Real Betis for his signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

There seem to be plenty of sides around Europe who would be willing to offer Vertonghen a two-year contract. I do expect him to complete the season with us before leaving in the summer. It is a shame that fans wouldn’t even be able to give him a proper send-off due to the lockdown.
