Report: Jose Mourinho gives ‘green light’ for surprise striker move

Football Insider claims that Jose Mourinho has given Tottenham Hotspur the green light to make a surprise move for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke.

Benteke has previously admitted that Tottenham wanted to sign him in January but he rejected the move to stay put at Palace (La Meuse via Football.London).

The Belgian international has a disappointing scoring record for the Eagles over the past two seasons and has fallen down the pecking order at Selhurst Park.

Football Insider claim that Spurs are looking at various realistic striker targets after seeing their move for Arkadiusz Milik collapse.

Benteke is said to be one of the options the club are assessing, with Mourinho an admirer of the 29-year-old, who he reportedly also tried to take to Old Trafford previously.

It is revealed that Palace are open to letting the former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker leave if they receive the right offer as they are keen to get him off their wage bill.

Benteke has completely lost confidence in front of goal over the last couple of years and seems incapable of even putting away relatively straight forward chances. While he is certainly a handful for defenders to handle, surely Mourinho will want a target man who can offer much more of a goal threat than the Belgian.
