Report: Jose Mourinho’s Roma keen on Spurs defender but face competition from Spain

AS Roma are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal, however, the Italian side are currently behind Atletico Madrid in the race to sign the Brazilian.

Corriere della Serra claim that Jose Mourinho’s side are not considered as favourites to land the 23-year-old, since they are unable to offer him Champions League football after finishing in sixth place in Serie A last season.

Atletico, by contrast, occupied third place in La Liga which secured them a place in European football’s most prestigious club competition once again which makes them a move attractive proposition to the Spurs right-back.

Sky Sports News (Football Daily) also reported early on Friday that Atletico are keen to land the former Barcelona player, having held a long-standing interest and were keen to bring him to the Metropolitano Stadium last summer.

If Tottenham are going to sign Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, it certainly looks like it will be Royal who will be leaving the club to make way for the England Under-21 international and also free up a non-homegrown space in Antonio Conte’s squad.

Royal is a decent right-back, but struggles to cope with the demands of the type of wing-back that Antonio Conte expects. Matt Doherty started to ‘click’ with the Italian’s methods prior to his injury and makes much more sense to retain the former Wolves man over Royal.
