Report: Journalist claims £27m Spurs man is open to move in January

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is open to a loan move to Ajax in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the De Telegraaf podcast, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij has claimed that Ajax are ready to make a move for the 24-year-old as a potential replacement for David Neres who could be on his way out of the Eredivisie champions.

Bergwijn, who joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven for £27million in January of last year has seen his season interrupted by injury, having only started three Premier League matches during the current term (transfermarkt).

He also missed out on a place in the Holland squad for Euro 2020, having found regular first-team football hard to come by under Jose Mourinho in the second half of the previous campaign

Verweij revealed that Bergwijn is interested in a return to his homeland, however, Spurs have not yet made a decision on whether they are prepared to see him leave North London.

He said: “Bergwijn has indicated that he really likes Ajax and then you will have to go to Spurs.”

He later added: “They asked whether Ajax’s interest was serious and Ajax responded in the affirmative. Spurs also indicated that they are not going to decide now and will only do so at a later stage.”

It would be foolish to see Bergwijn leave the club on loan with fixtures set to come thick and fast in the New Year, especially given the recent postponements.
