Guglielmo Vicario will have to wait a little longer for his Italy debut, after the Tottenham Hotspur keeper has been taken ill on international duty this week.
Having seen Hugo Lloris fall from grace last season, Ange Postecoglou moved swiftly to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer. Guglielmo Vicario was the man chosen to fill Lloris’ gloves, and he’s done a fine job so far.
The Italian stopper had a shaky start in the opening game against Brentford, but has been on top form since then. Vicario has four clean sheets so far this season, and in particular, put in a phenomenal performance to keep Spurs in the game against Chelsea when they were down to nine men.
Vicario won’t play for Italy this week
Despite being part of the Italian national team for over a year now, Vicario is yet to feature for the Azzurri, mainly because he has Gianluigi Donnarumma in front of him in the pecking order. And that isn’t going to change this week, unfortunately.
The Italian Football Federation has confirmed Vicario has fallen ill, with Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi replacing him in the squad.
The statement reads: “During the night Guglielmo Vicario suffered a slight fever. Therefore, as a precaution, Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has been called up and will reach Coverciano in the late morning.”
It is thought Vicario will miss the first game against North Macedonia tomorrow night, but he has stayed with the squad and there is a chance he could recover in time to play Ukraine on Monday.
Spurs Web Opinion
I really hope Vicario recovers quickly. First of all, he really deserves to make his Italy debut, and second of all, we really need him to return to Tottenham fit and healthy. We cannot afford any more fitness issues at all.
