Report: Kieran Trippier’s chances of leaving Spurs have suffered a blow

This summer is expected to be a busy one at Tottenham Hotspur with incomings and outgoings ahead of the new season.

Kieran Trippier’s future in North London has been the subject of much press speculation in recent weeks with Serie A side Napoli reported to have been keen on the right-back (Mirror).

Trippier was one of England’s brightest performers during their World Cup campaign last summer which saw them progress to the semi-final, in which the former Burnley player scored a stunning free-kick.

He has struggled this season to reach the heights of his displays in Russia which led to him even admitting in the press that he has been dealing with a long term groin injury (teamTALK).

While it had been reported earlier this month that Trippier’s wife Charlotte had visited Naples to view houses and schools for their children (Sky Sport Italia) it now looks as if any chance of a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s side is now off.

According to The Sun, Napoli have decided to focus their attention elsewhere as they want to sign a player who is younger than the 28-year-old Trippier and has the potential of a resale value.

A Napoli source was quoted by the paper as saying: “We will be pursuing a right back but will be going for a younger player, which is in line with the policy of the club.”

Opinion

Trippier has certainly had a season to forget but it remains to be seen whether he can regain his confidence at Spurs and fully recover from his injury.

His defensive position is a cause for concern and was at fault for both of Ajax’s goals in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.  Mauricio Pochettino must look to strengthen the right flank of his defence in the summer.
