According to a report from Mucho Deporte, Sevilla are one of a handful of Spanish clubs interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Bryan Gil, though they do not regard him as a priority signing in the January transfer window.
Gil was signed from Sevilla in the summer of 2021 in a part-exchange deal which saw Spurs send Erik Lamela and £21.6 million to the Spanish side (Sky Sports). His time in North London has been frustrating so far, though.
The youngster has made just 26 appearances for Spurs over the last 18 months (Transfermarkt) and even spent the second half of last season back on loan in La Liga with Valencia.
Gil was a wanted man in the summer, with Valencia reportedly close to renewing his loan deal (Mundo Deportivo 23/08/22 – as relayed by SportWitness).
Any potential departure was blocked due to Spurs not having a replacement (Domingo Ortiz). The 21-year-old has struggled for game time again this season, with just six cameo appearances totalling 73 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).
It emerged yesterday that Sevilla have been tracking Gil’s status ever since he left the club (Estadio Deportivo) and that the club could be keen on bringing the winger back, along with an array of other La Liga teams.
The latest from Mucho Deporte claims that while Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli appreciates Gil’s talents, “it cannot be said that Bryan is the first target. Not even number two.”
Apparently, “other positions are urgent” for Sevilla in the January transfer window, and it sounds like Sevilla “will wait” before making a possible move for Gil.
Spurs Web Opinion
The Bryan Gil situation is a strange one. By the sounds of it, Conte isn’t completely sold on the lad and I think if there was enough depth in the squad he would be out the door. That said, it would be a shame to give up on him, as I do feel like he has something to offer and could be a really exciting player if he’s given the chance to develop.
