Report: La Liga club are looking at Spurs’ Emerson Royal as potential signing

Sport Italia journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed Tottenham Hotspur’s Emerson Royal will leave the club and has cited his former club Real Betis as a possible destination for the Brazilian.

Royal arrived at Tottenham last summer from Barcelona for a reported fee of around £26m (Sky Sports). Sadly, things haven’t quite gone to plan for the 23-year-old in North London though.

Initially drafted in as a full-back, the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santo and the subsequent arrival of Antonio Conte saw Royal quickly forced to adapt to being a wing-back at Spurs.

Unfortunately, Royal has not taken to his new role as hoped. Despite making 61 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt) the Brazilian has been an inconsistent performer, to say the least.

With Spurs reportedly looking to sign a new wingback (90 Min), it’s believed one of Royal, Matt Doherty, or Djed Spence will leave the club.

All signs point to Royal being the one to depart, and reports have previously linked the player with a move to Inter Milan (Corriere dello Sport 22/12/22).

Now it sounds like Royal may have another option on the table in the form of a return to Spain according to Galetti. Apparently, a number of clubs across Europe have been looking at Royal with a view to securing his signature.

Galetti claims one of those clubs is Real Betis. Royal spent two-and-a-half years with the La Liga side, making 79 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt) and could reportedly return on loan there in the future.

The only problem for Betis is they would need to sell a player before signing Royal. The report claims Loren Moron or Martin Montoya would have to move on in order to make room for Royal.

It would probably be a good move for Royal to return to Real Betis, the club where he made his name. He spent a long time there and played well for the Spanish side so I’m sure he would be fairly happy to go back there and try again.
