Report: La Liga club fear losing out to Spurs in race for 18-year-old

Estadio Deportivo have claimed that Athletic Bilbao are not happy after they learned that Tottenham Hotspur entered the race to sign Barcelona starlet Dani Rodriguez.

Although Rodriguez is yet to break into Barcelona’s senior set-up, the 18-year-old has impressed for their B side this season and his displays have allegedly turned quite a few heads.

The 18-year-old’s current deal at Camp Nou runs out in the summer and it was reported Sport last week that Barca ‘fear’ they will lose the teenager to Tottenham, who would be willing to offer him a lucrative contract.

Athletic Bilbao fearful Tottenham could beat them

Estadio Deportivo have now reported that the news of Spurs entering the picture has not gone down well at Bilbao, who were also exploring a move for Rodriguez.

The report says that the winger is originally from Basque Country and Athletic Club were hoping to take him back home at the end of the season.

It is explained that the La Liga side were hopeful of signing the attacker on a free transfer but they now realise ‘it won’t be easy’ amidst competition from Tottenham.

The publication adds that Ernesto Valverde’s men will still try to ‘play their cards’ to attract Rodriguez but they are not confident of winning the race for his signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how the likes of Pape Sarr and Destiny Udogie have thrived at Tottenham, the North London club would be quite an attractive destination for the best young players across Europe.

Spurs should be able to make a case to Rodriguez that his development would be best served by moving to N17, just as they did with Lucas Bergvall.
