Report: La Liga club may be open to selling midfielder recently linked with Tottenham

Sport have claimed that Barcelona could be open to selling rumoured Tottenham target Frenkie de Jong if he does not accept a wage cut.

On Wednesday, Jijantes reported that Tottenham had begun work on a sensational deal to poach De Jong from Camp Nou in the summer.

The report claimed that the North London club were ready to offer €60m (£51.3m) plus bonuses to bring the Dutchman to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The outlet even suggested that the Premier League side would offer the player a bumper contract, which would allow the 26-year-old to earn the same salary as he currently does at Barca if he can achieve certain objectives.

However, this claim was quickly dismissed by Alasdair Gold, who subsequently took to social media to insist Spurs have made no such proposal for the midfielder.

Barcelona’s plan for De Jong amid Spurs links

Sport have now relayed the report by Jijantes and have also provided additional information on Barca’s stance regarding the Netherlands international.

It is explained that while the La Liga club are not making any immediate plans to offload De Jong, they are expected to offer him a new deal with a considerably reduced salary.

The report says that Barca will only offer for former Ajax man a salary of €15m (£12.8m) and should he fail to accept, they might be willing to put him on the shop window.

Spurs Web Opinion

Barcelona have to raise funds through player sales in order to make their interest payments this summer, which is why Daniel Levy might be sniffing around the club to explore potential bargain deals. However, De Jong might not be a realistic target for Spurs unless he accepts a substantial wage cut.
