Report: La Liga giants join Villarreal in the race to sign Spurs’ Gio Lo Celso

According to TyCSports, Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso this summer.

This comes after Estadio Deportivo reported that Tottenham had offered Atletico the chance to sign the Argentine.

Lo Celso made just nine appearances in the Premier League last season for Spurs before completing a loan move to Villarreal in January (TransferMarkt).

The 26-year-old impressed for Unai Emery’s side as they advanced all the way to the Champions League semi-final before being eliminated by Liverpool (UEFA).

The Argentine is expected to seal a permanent move away from Spurs this summer as he appears to be out of Antonio Conte’s plans (Football.London).

The Times claim that Villarreal have already taken steps to make Lo Celso’s stay in Spain permanent by preparing an offer in the region of £16 million plus £5m in add-ons, but this was falling short of Tottenham’s valuation.

However, the Yellow Submarine now look as though they will face competition for the midfielder’s signature as Atletico Madrid have reportedly registered an interest in the player (TyCSports).

Diego Simeone is said to admire Lo Celso’s busy style of play and he is encouraging the club to make a strong attempt to bring Spurs’ number 18 to the Spanish capital.

Although he has had some encouraging spells during his time at Spurs, it is clear that a move away for Gio is the best option for all parties.

With the arrival of Yves Bissouma from Brighton, Spurs have their Lo Celso replacement ready to go.
