Report: La Liga giants open talks with Spurs for defender; player prefers Spain switch

Atletico Madrid are reported to have opened talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a move for Emerson Royal, according to Spanish news outlet Marca.

The Brazilian international only joined the north Londoners in the summer for 30m euro (£25.8m) from Barcelona and signed a five-year contract (BBC).

The 22-year-old has recently lost his place in Antonio Conte’s starting eleven with Matt Doherty coming back into favour and the former Wolves man having impressed in recent outings against Leeds United and Everton.

The Sun claimed yesterday that Tottenham are preparing to let Royal leave club and are ready to listen to offers ahead of next summer.

Marca claim that Atletico made contact with Tottenham around a month ago with their objective to bolster their options at right-back.

Inter Milan have also been credited with interest in the former Barcelona player, however Royal’s preference is to return to Spain where he has also featured for Real Betis.

Unfortunately, it has not worked out for Royal at Tottenham. It didn’t take the opposition long to learn that they simply need to give him space on the right flank and easily head away his attempts to cross the ball into the penalty area.

Doherty has shown a new level of confidence in recent matches and has provided something of a creative element to his game, providing two assists in the win at home to Everton and netting at Leeds.
