Report: Lazio transfer attempt could hand Spurs a nice pay-day thanks to sell-on clause

Multiple journalists have reported that Lazio are interested in signing Jack Clarke from Sunderland in the final days of the January transfer window.

Alasdair Gold has relayed that Lazio have initiated contacts with Sunderland over a potential deal worth between £10m and £15m.

Tottenham sold the winger in 2021 for just £750,000, but they did insert a 25% sell-on clause into the sale to the Black Cats, meaning Spurs could be in for a nice pay-day.

Sunderland do not want to sell Jack Clarke yet

However, Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on the idea of Clarke being sold this week, as he claims the package from Lazio has already been rejected by Sunderland.

The Serie A side reportedly offered around €16m, while Clarke would be valued at €30m in the summer. Romano even adds that Sunderland plan on keeping their attacker if they get promoted to the Premier League.

As such, despite Lazio’s efforts, Tottenham may have to wait a little longer for that sell-on fee. That being said, the longer Sunderland wait to sell, the higher Clarke’s price tag may rise.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I think Spurs would likely rather Sunderland hold onto Clarke for now, then sell him for double the price if he helps them achieve Premier League promotion. At just £10m, Tottenham may as well buy him back themselves for 75% of the full price.
