Report: Leeds rejected chance to sign Spurs player during January window

Leeds turned down the chance to sign Harry Winks after Tottenham offered the midfielder to them during the January transfer window according to The Yorkshire Post.

The report states the Whites were offered the opportunity to sign Winks alongside Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek before the winter window slammed shut.

However, Leeds ultimately turned down the chance to sign either player, as neither reportedly met the standards held by manager Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine coach was said to only want to sign players in January if they were significant upgrades on those at his current disposal, while he was also conscious of running the risk of having to potentially pay over the odds.

United outcast Van de Beek instead secured a move to Everton on loan until the end of the season and will link up with former Spurs midfielder Dele Alli at Goodison Park (Independent).

Meanwhile, Winks remained at Spurs and will act as a midfield option for Antonio Conte alongside new signing Rodrigo Bentancur, Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and youngster Harvey White.

It is interesting that Winks was offered up to Leeds and maybe Conte wanted to clear more space for another acquisition in January. But the fact they were handing them the chance to sign him doesn’t exactly give confidence that there was much interest in him elsewhere however.
