Report: Leeds seal deal for forward who was on reportedly Tottenham’s radar

BBC Sport have reported that Leeds United have signed Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt.

Spurs completed the signing of Alfie Devine from Wigan late last month but the midfielder was not the only one of Latics’ promising youngsters that the North Londoners had their eye on.

Gelhardt was also reportedly on Tottenham’s radar on the back of the 18-year-old’s impressive displays in the Championship since breaking into the Wigan first-team (Daily Mail).

The forward was reportedly available this summer for a price of around £5million, according to The Daily Star.

Leeds Live offered Spurs some hope last week by reporting that negotiations between Wigan and Leeds had slowed down since the League One club were looking to rope in Premier League clubs to spark a bidding war with the Latics.

However, BBC Sport have now confirmed that the teenager has completed a move to Elland Road after Marcelo Bielsa’s side agreed on an undisclosed fee with Wigan.

Spurs Web Opinion

I suspect Gelhardt picked Leeds over Spurs since he believed he had a better chance of getting first-team football at Elland Road than at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I am not too bothered we missed out on him as Troy Parrott is in the same age group as Gelhardt but arguably has a higher ceiling.
