Report: Leeds United move ahead of Spurs in race for Championship starlet

According to a report from The Daily Mail, Leeds United have now stepped up their efforts to sign rumoured Tottenham target, Joe Gelhardt.

Tottenham are said to have already tied up a £500,000 deal for Wigan midfielder, Alfie Devine (Football Insider), taking advantage of the Championship side’s perilous financial situation after they went into administration.

It was previously reported that Gelhardt was another one of the Latics’ promising young talents whom Spurs were looking to snap up this summer.

After impressing for Wigan’s youth sides over the years, the 18-year-old has managed to break into the club’s first-team this season and has not looked out of place in the Championship.

Reports indicate that the striker, who is attracting interest from several Premier League sides, could be available for £5m this summer (Daily Star).

The Daily Mail now claims that Leeds are looking to snap up Gelhardt this summer ahead of their first Premier League season since being relegated in 2003/04.

It is revealed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now the front-runners for the teenager’s signature, having stolen a march on the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Everton, and Celtic.

Spurs Web Opinion

Gelhardt is older and much more advanced in his development than Alfie Devine, having already established himself as a regular for the Championship side. I fear that signing the 18-year-old might not send the right message to Troy Parrott, especially given Jose’s unwillingness to use him despite our injury crisis a few months ago.
