Report: Levy declined chance to sign Man City star for £50m last summer

The Daily Mail have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur could have signed Ruben Dias for just £50m last summer.

Tottenham’s failure to bring in a top-quality central defender to the club seems to have cost the club dearly, with the North Londoners failing to secure a top-six finish for the first time since 2009.

The likes of Milan Skriniar and Antonio Rudiger were linked with a move to Spurs 12 months ago but the club ended up completing a cut-price deal for Joe Rodon instead.

Dias is another name who was mentioned as a target, with reports at the time claiming that Jose Mourinho was keen on bringing his compatriot to the club.

However, the 24-year-old completed a £62m move to City instead and he has certainly proven to be a good value for money.

Dias’ addition has been a key reason behind the defensive improvement that Pep Guardiola’s side have seen this season, with the Portuguese international even taking home the Football Writers’ Player of the Year Award in his first season in English football.

The Mail reports that the former Benfica man could have completed a move to Spurs last summer but Daniel Levy decided against forking out £50m for him.

In hindsight, £50m for Dias would have clearly been a bargain but that is a substantial fee for a player who was unproven in a top league before arriving at City. Spurs’ mistake last summer was not missing out on Dias but rather their failure to bring in any top central defender.
