Report: Ligue 1 set to seal loan signing of Tottenham defender with £16.7m buy option

Rennes are set to sign defender Joe Rodon on loan from Tottenham, according to Fabrizio Romano.

A deal to for the 24-year-old centre-back is said to be in the final stages with the Ligue 1 club managing to incorporate an option to buy him permanently for €20 million (£16.7m).

Journalist Mike McGrath reported Rennes had prioritised the loan signing of Rodon, who had long been expected to seal a move away from Spurs this summer (Football Insider).

The news comes after The Athletic claimed Premier League newcomers Fulham also emerged as admirers for the Wales international centre-back.

Rodon, who joined Spurs from Swansea in 2020, has struggled to progress past being a squad player throughout his time in north London.

He has made 24 appearances for the club and played just 10 times in all competitions last season (Transfermarkt) with Antonio Conte preferring other options ahead of him.

Rodon has played a part in Spurs’ pre-season preparations over the summer and recently switched to the No. 22 shirt to allow summer signing Ivan Perisic to take up the No. 14.

Rodon will be in need of regular first-team football at this stage in his career and a move to Rennes could be really beneficial for him. They have a place in the Europa League so there will be opportunities to get plenty of game time.
