Report: Liverpool edge ahead of Spurs in race for midfield star

With Christian Eriksen’s recently revealing his intention to seek a new challenge (Ekstra Bladet), Spurs have been linked with several replacements for the Dane.

Based on reports, the deal for a potential replacement that appears to be at the most advanced stage seems to be Tottenham’s move for Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso (The Mirror).

However, recent reports from Spain ( Estadio Deportivo) indicate that Betis are making it difficult for Spurs to do the deal by demanding €70 million upfront without any performance-based bonuses.

The Mirror reported last week that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino had identified Sporting midfielder Bruno Fernandes as a potential alternative to Le Celso.

The Portuguese international, who is also said to be interesting Manchester United, has scored 31 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions this season, an incredible tally for someone who isn’t a forward.

Now, according to a report from The Sun, Liverpool have moved to the front of the queue for the Portuguese midfielder’s signature ahead of both Spurs and United.

Correio de Manha claim that Tottenham are reluctant to enter the bidding war for Fernandes given the uncertainty surrounding Eriksen’s future and due to their admiration of Le Celso.

While Fernandes is no doubt an incredible talent, we would prefer signing Le Celso over the Portuguese international. We believe the former PSG will be a perfect fit for Pochettino’s system, and a player like him is just what we need even if Eriksen somehow ends up staying
