According to Uruguayan journalist Rodrigo Romano, Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham, has now emerged as a target for Liverpool.
Ugarte has been one of Sporting’s most consistent performers this season, having become one of the pillars in midfield for Ruben Amorim’s men.
His performances both domestically and in Europe have allegedly caught the attention of Tottenham, with multiple Portuguese outlets reporting over the last couple of months that the midfielder is on the Premier League club’s radar (Leonino).
The print edition of O Jogo (29/04/23 as relayed by Sport Witness) claimed last week that Ugarte is ‘certain’ to leave the Jose Alvalade Stadium this summer as the Portuguese club’s efforts to tie the 22-year-old down to a new contract have failed.
However, the publication added that the Spurs’ pursuit of the youngster had been put on the back burner until the North London club hire a new head coach.
If Romano’s latest update is to be believed, Tottenham now look set to face competition from Liverpool for Ugarte’s signature.
The journalist took to social media to reveal that the Reds have enquired about the Uruguay international’s availability and the cost of the operation as they plot a summer move.

More clubs are likely to enter the fray for Ugarte as we get closer to the summer transfer window.
It is imperative that Tottenham appoint a new head coach (or a director of football) soon as they would otherwise be risking allowing others to steal a march over them in the race for their top transfer targets.
