Report: Liverpool have moved into pole position for Spurs-linked midfielder

According to the print edition of Record (10/05/23 as relayed by Sport Witness), Liverpool are now in the lead to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham recently.

Several Portuguese outlets have reported over the last few weeks that Tottenham are expected to push ahead with a move for Ugarte, who has a release clause of €60m (£52.6m) in his contract (O Jogo – 29/04/23 via Sport Witness).

However, if Record’s latest update is to be believed, it is Liverpool, not Spurs, who are leading the race for the midfielder’s signing, with the Reds having ‘advanced’ their interest over recent days.

The report states that Jurgen Klopp’s men have been watching Ugarte in action recently and are now prepared to make a move.

The Uruguay international’s agents, Jorge Chijane and Jorge Mendes, are expected to arrive in Lisbon this week to speak to Sporting about their client’s future and Liverpool’s interest.

The outlet states that the Reds are the ‘strongest candidates’ for Ugarte as things stand and could even make their opening offer shortly.

If Tottenham delay appointing a new sporting director and head coach any further, they risk being left behind in the race for their top summer transfer targets, with the likes of Newcastle and Liverpool seemingly already laying the groundwork to land the likes of Maddison and Ugarte respectively.
