According to reports in Italy, Liverpool have entered the race for Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly, who is one of the centre-backs Spurs are allegedly looking at this summer.
Koulibaly has been one of the standout defenders in the Serie A for several seasons and it is no surprise to see such reported interest in the Senegal international.
The 28-year-old has been on Tottenham’s radar this year with reports suggesting that the club made a move for the Napoli star during the January transfer window (Eldesmarque).
Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio, offered an encouraging update this week when he suggested that a move to Spurs is still very much on the cards as there was a ‘good feeling’ between Koulibaly’s agent and Daniel Levy (Sky Sports Q and A).
Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb have now claimed that Liverpool have opened talks to sign Koulibaly as Jurgen Klopp wants him to partner Virgil van Dijk at the back for the Reds.
The report reveals that Napoli have decided to sell the defender this summer, although they are unlikely to receive anywhere near the €100 million asking price that they previously wanted for him.
Spurs Web Opinion
With the Upamecano deal now looking like it is dead, Koulibaly is the best centre-back option available in the market this summer. Many clubs will be competing for his signature and we will have our work cut out to bring him to North London. My gut feeling is that we are likely to go for a younger option as the Napoli star won’t have much resale value.
