Report: Liverpool want to tie rumoured Spurs target down to a new deal

The Liverpool Echo have revealed that Liverpool wish to tie down rumoured Tottenham target Joe Gomez to a new contract.

Gomez, who had been a mainstay in the Reds backline when fit over the last few years, has seemingly fallen behind Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate in the pecking order to be Virgil van Dijk’s defensive partner this season.

90 min reported back in March that the centre-back wants to leave Liverpool this summer to get regular first-team football under his belt and give himself the best chance of making the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

The report claimed that the likes of Spurs, Newcastle, West Ham and Leicester were all keen on snapping up the 24-year-old and that Jurgen Klopp would not stand in the player’s way if he wanted to leave.

However, The Liverpool Echo have now claimed that Gomez, whose current contract runs out in 2024 (Transfermakrt), remains part of Liverpool’s plans going forward.

It is said that the Reds are trying to tie the centre-back down to a new contract but it is explained that the likelihood of that happening depends on how Gomez views his situation.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given that Gomez has primarily been used as cover for Trent-Alexander Arnold at right-back this season, I do expect him to push for a move.

I believe he would be a very good fit for Conte’s back three, given his aggressive style of defending and his technical ability on the ball.

One would expect plenty of Premier League clubs to vie for the 24-year-old’s signature this summer.
