Report: Luton Town midfielder is on Tottenham’s radar but Aston Villa lead the race

Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of Ross Barkley from Luton Town, but Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are among those keen on the player after his resurgent campaign this year.

Barkley rose to prominence more than a decade ago when he burst onto the scene with his boyhood club, Everton, before sealing a big move to Chelsea in 2018.

Things didn’t quite work out there for Barkley and he was released by the Blues two years ago. A year with French side Nice led to a return to the Premier League, with the midfielder joining newly promoted Luton Town for their first season in the top flight.

Despite relegation for the Hatters, a number of their players impressed this year, with Barkley right up there as one of the top performers. The 30-year-old registered five goals and six assists in 37 appearances for Luton this term (Transfermarkt).

Spurs chasing Ross Barkley but Aston Villa lead the race

With Luton preparing for the Championship, it seems they will do so without Barkley, who will be handed a Premier League lifeline. Aston Villa are at the head of the queue, but HITC report Spurs and Manchester United are also among those circling.

Villa are thought to be “confident” they can get the deal across the line “quickly,” before other clubs swoop in. Unai Emery’s side are “now progressing in talks” to bring Barkley back to the club, years after a fairly unsuccessful loan spell.

Apparently, Barkley is now “on the radar” for Spurs, United, and Newcastle, too, while Bournemouth, Wolves, and Brighton are also interested.

Spurs Web Opinion

I was really impressed by Barkley this season, but I don’t think he is suitable for a top-six club still, and I’d rather Spurs didn’t sign him. A move to Bournemouth, Wolves, or Brighton feels more appropriate.
