Report: Lyon now prioritising a pursuit of rumoured Spurs defensive target

Foot Mercato have revealed that Lyon have rejected the chance to sign Real Madrid left-back Marcelo and are instead prioritising a deal for rumoured Tottenham target Pervis Estupinan.

Marca reported earlier this month that Villarreal were willing to cash in on Estupinan this summer and that Spurs were leading the race to sign the Ecuador international.

Tottenham’s interest in the Villarreal star was subsequently backed up by El Periodico Mediterraneo (11/07/22 – via Sport Witness), who claimed that Antonio Conte had asked the North London club’s hierarchy to snap up the left-back.

Foot Mercato previously revealed that Lyon also held a strong interest in signing Estupinan this summer.

The same publication have now reported that the Ligue 1 club have rejected the chance to sign Marcelo and are instead prioritising a deal for the Villarreal star.

The report states that Real Madrid offered the Brazilian to Lyon but the French club were put off by the left-back’s salary demands of €9m (£7.6m) per year.

It is alleged that Peter Bosz’s men are set to push ahead with their pursuit of Estupinan over the coming days and weeks.

Spurs Web Opinion

Estupinan does not offer enough going forward to play as a left-wing-back in Conte’s system. Besides, we already have two players in Perisic and Sessegnon for that role.

So, if Spurs were eyeing a move for the Villarreal star, Conte probably viewed him as an option for the left centre-back role. However, our singing of Lenglet could have ended the interest in the Ecuadorian.
