Report: Man City emerge as frontrunners for Spurs-linked Brazilian

According to Portuguese news outlet CM Journal, Manchester City has emerged as frontrunners for the signature of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Tottenham Hotspur were said to have made contact with Sporting in March to sound out a potential deal ahead of the summer transfer window (O Jogo print edition 14/03/22).

The 23-year-old Brazilian has also attracted interest from Newcastle United, however, City have moved to the front of the queue and are in the market for a new midfielder with Fernandinho having already confirmed he will leave the Premier League champions at the end of the current campaign.

City are reported to be ready to table a £34million offer to bring him to the Etihad, with Spurs now appearing to have to play catch up if they want to also compete for his attention.

Nunes has done well in Portugual since joining from Estoril in 2019, however, Tottenham already have an issue with non-homegrown players and will also see Pape Matar Sarr arriving at the club this summer.

Fabio Paratici is known to have a number of targets in play at any one time, it would seem likely that Spurs will have to clear their decks before spending big money this summer.
