Report: Man City make ‘direct contact’ for defender Spurs pushed to sign in summer

Manchester City have made ‘direct contact’ with the representatives of Villarreal defender and reported Tottenham transfer target Pau Torres, according to Marca.

The 24-year-old’s performances in La Liga and Europe last season placed him firmly on the radar of a number of clubs over the summer, including Tottenham.

Torres reportedly spoke to Spurs about a potential move to north London worth around £55 million, though it has since been revealed that the Spaniard turned down that chance in the hope of receiving a better offer.

Marca report that Man City have placed themselves in the race for Torres, and claim the club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has even initiated contact with the player’s representatives.

The report claims that Begiristain has been monitoring the centre-back for a while, and is keen to add him to the reigning Premier League champions’ defence.

A move could see him line up in a start-studded central defence including the likes of Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake.

Torres is a defender that can offer a lot to any side, especially as he is a left-sided player. Spurs tried to land him over the summer and although the money was evidently there, they struggled to secure the move due to lack of Champions League football. A move to City clearly seems to be more lucrative as a result.
