Report: Man City set to step up interest in Spurs-linked Premier League defender

Manchester City could step up their efforts to sign rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target Nathan Ake in the summer, according to a report by The Athletic.

Ake has been a mainstay at the back for the Cherries over the last few years but faces an uncertain future with Eddie Howe’s men involved in a desperate battle to beat the drop.

Football Insider reported back in February that Ake has been a long-term target for Tottenham and that the North Londoners could try to snap up the centre-half this summer if Bournemouth are relegated.

It was suggested that the Lilywhites view the Dutchman as the perfect replacement for Jan Vertonghen.

The Athletic now claim that Man City have intensified their interest in the 25-year-old as Pep Guardiola looks to bolster his backline this summer.

City are said to be leading the race for Ake, who has two years left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium, while Chelsea also are reportedly keen in re-signing their former player.

Spurs Web Opinion

Ake is the best like-for-like replacement for Vertonghen we can sign, should the Belgian leave at the end of the season, especially given the vast experience the 25-year-old has in the Premier League.

He will be an excellent fit for our system as not only can he play at centre-half but he can also cover for Ben Davies at left-back given the defensive requirements of the role.
