Manchester Evening News have claimed that Manchester City will get a boost of £10m thanks to Tottenham’s acquisition of Pedro Porro.
Tottenham’s negotiations with Sporting for Porro certainly went right to the wire and with less than 48 hours left in the transfer window, it appeared as if the deal was set to collapse after it emerged that Sporting Lisbon had reneged on the terms of the agreement (David Ornstein).
However, Spurs managed to get a deal for the right-back over the line on deadline day, with the North London club eventually agreeing to pay a loan fee of £5m with an obligation to make it permanent for £39m in the summer (Sky Sports).
Sky Sports previously reported that Man City had added a 30 per cent sell-on clause on Porro when he completed a permanent move to Sporting last summer.
This has now been backed up by MEN, who state that City will receive 30 per cent of the £39m Spurs will pay for Porro in the summer, with Pep Guardiola’s side thus set to receive a boost of around £10m at the end of the season.
However, MEN’s numbers do not quite add up as City will be owed £11.7m rather than £10m if they are due to receive 30 per cent of the £39m fee.
Spurs Web Opinion
I suspect that one of the reasons that Tottenham and Sporting struck an initial loan agreement for Porro with an obligation to make it permanent is to minimise the fee that the Portuguese club would owe City. Sporting would likely be able to pocket the full loan fee.
