Report: Man in demand Vertonghen receives contract offer from European side

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is reported to have received an offer from Benfica.

According to Italian news outlet Tutto Mercato, the Portuguese giants have already made contact with Vertonghen’s representatives and put forward their offer for the out of contract Belgian.

Vertonghen, 33, played a key role in Tottenham’s rise under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, making 315 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals since joining from Ajax in 2012 (transfermarkt).

The experienced central defender’s agent,Tom De Mul revealed in February that there had already been interest in the player (Sky Sports).

The report claims that while Benfica have lodged their offer, there is also interest from Italy with Roma and Fiorentina both keen and a switch to Serie A appears to be his most likely destination.

Vertonghen admitted in a recent interview with talkSPORT that his time at Tottenham could have possibly lasted longer but is now taking the time to weigh up his options ahead of the start of next season.
