Report: Man United are ready to challenge Spurs for Premier League star

Football Transfers have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are set to face competition from Manchester United for Brentford striker Ivan Toney in January.

Plenty of names have been mooted over the last few weeks as potential replacements for Harry Kane at Spurs, with Toney being one of them.

It was reported by The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare earlier this month that Tottenham could sign a young, up-and-coming striker such as Gift Orban this summer before pursuing the Brentford star in January after he has served his ban for breaching the FA’s betting rules.

Spurs’ interest in Toney was also backed up by journalist Dean Jones, who said on GiveMeSport a couple of days ago that the Lilywhites have already started exploring a move for the England international.

Competition from Man Utd in Ivan Toney race

Football Transfers have now claimed that Spurs are set to face competition from clubs from the Premier League and across Europe for Toney, with United being prime among them.

The report states that the Red Devils have had internal conversations about making an offer for the 27-year-old in January as Erik Ten Hag is keen on adding another number nine to his squad to supplement Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dutch coach allegedly views Toney as a good fit as he has traditionally used a physical centre-forward for his system, with the Brentford man thought to be open to a switch to Old Trafford.

The race for Toney’s signature will heat up during January, which is why it might not be a great strategy for Spurs to plan with the idea of getting the 27-year-old in January. It is also quite possible that the centre-forward signs a new deal at the Getch Community Stadium over the coming months.
