Report: Man United enquired about midfielder before he signed for Spurs

The Athletic have revealed that Manchester United enquired about Yves Bissouma before Tottenham eventually won the race for the midfielder.

Bissouma became Tottenham’s third signing of the window, with the North London club agreeing on a fee of around £25m with Brighton for Mali international, which could rise to £30m including add-ons (Football.London).

In his first interview with Spurs TV, the 25-year-old admitted that it was a dream come true for him to play in the Champions League this season.

The Daily Mail claimed that Tottenham’s qualification for the Champions League was one of the key reasons the club beat the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United to Bissouma’s signature.

The report added that Spurs’ Premier League rivals were surprised by the price the Lilywhites paid for the midfielder as they expected Brighton to push for £35m.

If The Athletic are to be believed, Man Utd also held an interest in Bissouma before his move to Tottenham. It is revealed that the Red Devils called Brighton to check on the player’s availability ahead of Spurs agreeing a fee.

However, the report explains that Erik Ten Hag’s men did not consider Bissouma a priority, with Frenkie de Jong said to be the club’s number one midfield target this summer.

The Bissouma signing proves just how crucial it was for us to finish in the top four. Had we missed out on the Champions League, it is quite conceivable that the midfielder would have preferred a move to Arsenal or Man Utd.
