Report: Man United enquired about signing Dane Scarlett before new Spurs contract

Manchester United reportedly enquired about signing Tottenham striker Dane Scarlett before it was confirmed he had signed a new contract, according to the Manchester Evening News.

It is claimed the Red Devils’ director of football Matt Judge asked Spurs about signing the 18-year-old last month, but was met with the news that he had already agreed on a new contract.

Scarlett was approaching the end of his deal in North London but it was announced by Tottenham on Wednesday that he had put pen to paper on fresh terms keeping him at the club until 2026.

The England youth international has been prominent in the club’s youth system and spent last season in and around the first-team playing squad.

He was handed his Spurs debut in November 2020 in the Europa League against Ludogorets and has gone on to make nine more appearances (Transfermarkt).

Scarlett also became the club’s youngest ever player in the Premier League at the age of 16 years and 320 days when he came on as a substitute in a 2-0 win against West Brom last term (talkSPORT).

Thankfully Tottenham had Scarlett’s contract extension wrapped up before United enquired about him as that could have been a devastating way to lose him.

Now they have tied him down for a while longer, the next step is to find a club where he can go on loan to get more experience instead of keeping him on the bench.
