Report: Man United favourites to sign playmaker despite Spurs making bid

Tottenham Hotspur have had a busy transfer window in terms of rumours and links, however, the club have still yet to invest in a senior player for the past 16 months.

If reports are to be believed, this is not through a lack of trying, as the BBC claim that Tottenham made a £53m bid for Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso.

The report adds that Betis turned down the offer as Lo Celso has a release clause of a whopping £88m in his current contract.

The attacking midfielder registered 16 goals and six assists in the 2018/19 season for Betis, playing 45 games in the process. He is also in Argentina’s Copa America squad for this summer.

With the future of Christian Eriksen still unclear at Tottenham (Ekstra Bladet), Lo Celso could prove to be a very worthy replacement.

However, despite Spurs’ interest, Estadio Deportivo now claim that Manchester United are favourites to sign Lo Celso, with club chiefs holding a meeting with Real Betis surrounding a potential deal of £67m.

The Daily Star claim that this hijack could accelerate in the coming days, so Spurs may have to make their move earlier rather than later if they want their man.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I just can’t see Spurs wrapping up a deal for an expensive playmaker while Eriksen’s future is still unknown. Therefore, if United come in with bids for Lo Celso in the next week, I don’t see Spurs doing anything to stop it.
