Report: Man United hoping to beat Tottenham and Arsenal to 21-year-old defender

Tottenham may face a battle with Manchester United for the signing of Dayot Upamecano this summer, with the Red Devils now setting their sights on the Leipzig star (Express).

Upamecano is reportedly a wanted man across Europe (France Football), which comes as no surprise as the defender has evolved into one of the most complete centre-backs in the Bundesliga.

The Frenchman is still only 21 years of age and Don Balon (via TEAMtalk) claimed last month that the Leipzig defender was at the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list.

Tottenham’s North London rivals, Arsenal, have also been linked with him in the past (Daily Star).

The Express now claim that Man United have given up on their efforts to sign Napoli defender, Kalidou Koulibaly, and have instead turned their attentions to Upamecano.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be keen on revamping his backline and has reportedly made the Leipzig centre half the club’s top target.

Spurs Web Opinion

I don’t think we are likely to spend big on a centre half this summer. With Dier moving back into central defence and the emergence of Japhet Tanganga, we aren’t short of options in the position, even if Jan Vertonghen is to leave. I would prefer us to spend most of our budget on a defensive midfielder like Geoffrey Kondogbia.
