Report: Man Utd become frontrunners for defender linked with Spurs

Manchester United are likely to be Napoli centre back Kalidou Koulibaly’s most likely next destination, according to reports in Italy.

Spanish news outlet El Desmarque reported last month that Tottenham were front runners to sign Koulibaly but the 28-year-old ended up staying in Naples.

Il Mattino (as translated by the Daily Star) now reports that Spurs are still interested in the Senegal international and could make another approach for him in the summer.

However, the report claims that Chelsea and Manchester United will battle it out with Spurs for Kolibaly’s signature, with the Red Devils said to be leading the race for the defender at the moment.

It is reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified the experienced defender as a key target and wants him to build a partnership with Harry Maguire at the back.

Spurs could also be in the market for a centre half in the summer with Jan Vertonghen’s contract running out at the end of the season.

While Koulibaly will be a fantastic addition and will certainly be an upgrade on both Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, I just can’t see us paying the kind of money it would require for us to sigh him. The club’s business last summer and in January indicates that they will continue to pursue younger and cheaper options who have the potential to develop top players.
