Report: Man Utd could enter the race for 26-year-old linked with Spurs and Chelsea

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has said on his official website that Manchester United could challenge Tottenham and Chelsea for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries in January.

Although Dumfries has failed to replicate the same sort of performances recently that he delivered in his first campaign at Inter, the Dutchman has had a very good World Cup, having three goal contributions to his name in four appearances so far (Transfermarkt).

The 26-year-old’s displays in Qatar have seemingly bought him to the attention of Premier League clubs, with Italian publications suggesting over recent weeks that Spurs and Chelsea are set to battle it out for the right wing-back’s services (TuttoSport).

CalcioMercato reported earlier this week that Inter would be willing to cash in on Dumfries as the Nerazzurri believe that his value has peaked, owing to his performances at the World Cup.

This information has now been backed up by Galetti, who claims that Simone Inzaghi’s men would be willing to evaluate offers for the Netherlands international starting from €30m (£25.8m).

The journalist mentions that Antonio Conte has identified Dumfries as a potential replacement for Emerson Royal and that Chelsea have also expressed interest in the former PSV Eindhoven man.

Galetti then goes on to add that the Inter star is also on the radar of Man Utd, with the Red Devils alleged to have ‘taken information’ on the player’s price over recent days.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Dumfries would be an upgrade on Emerson Royal, I still have my doubts over whether the Dutchman would be able to provide the kind of creativity and attacking thrust that Spurs need as he does not really beat his man in one vs one situations, and his delivery can sometimes leave a lot to be desired.

I am not convinced that the 26-year-old would be an upgrade on Matt Doherty, particularly if the Irishman shows the kind of form he did during the second half of season. It can be argued that Djed Spence also has a much higher ceiling than the Inter star.
